- Software
Before you start ANY downloading, you
MUST get this program. No more hairpulling when you get disconnected at 95% of a 15 MB
file - this program will resume the download at the point it stopped. And much more... So Get Right!!!
Tucows - the Ultimate Collection of Winsock Software. Probably
everything you'll ever need for using the net.
Nonags - a site
for freeware without those nagging 'if you like this product please send $XXX
to....' popups.
- shareware.com
- The way to find shareware on the Internet - great place!
- Jumbo -
another site chock full of shareware. Takes more time to load than shareware.com.
- IRC
- HomePages
Want your own homepage? I always
thought I couldn't make a homepage cause I don't know how to say it in slovak... <G>
(I would have to ask my ISP for it and they, as slovaks tend to, speak slovak.) However,
geocities, in their infinite kindness, have given me a web space to call my own. If you
want to hang your plaque on a homepage too, try this out. Oh, it's free, did I mention
that? And they also give you a free email address. Since merging with
Yahoo, though, the email is web-based, not a real pop mail account like
they had before.
- If you need
a free *commercial* site, go to Xoom.
- Doteasy.com
- will register your domain name AND host your site for as little as $15
a year. This site is now hosted there. What I like most about them is
that you get an unlimited number of POP3/web email addresses.
- And... if you decide to make a homepage, you're going to have
to know something about HTML - I used NCSA's
Beginner's Guide to HTML.
-
absolute resource - an excellent start point for everything concerning
HTML.
- A most informative site about Hebrew on the web, including
writing HTML pages in hebrew can be found here.
- Free Email:
- Free
email Address directory - I used
to have a list of various free email services on the net, but this site
totally put my list to shame. Go there for any kind of free email: web
based, pop3, forwarding and much more. SUPERB
SITE!
However, I will mention my favourite POP-3 providers: @yifan.net,
@mailroom.com and @zxmail.com
(which gives you 10MB storage!).
- Search
Engines:
- Google.com
- Absolutely the best. They have an
Israeli version too.
- Altavista
- has found things for me where other search engines have failed.
- excite
- HotBot
- Dogpile - a
Multi-Engine search tool
- and of course, no search engine list can be complete without
good old Yahoo! which
isn't actually a search engine but a mega-index.
- 'Zines
- Netsurfer
Digest - a free email delivered e-zine with lots of links. (Can be read on the web or
emailed directly)
- Mousy Magazine - an
online magazine for and about women who are actively participating in the digital world.
- Viewzone - a look at
life from different angles. Really neat articles.
- Miscellaneous
- HumanClick
- a neat free software for webmasters (and that means anyone with a
homepage!) allowing them to see who is on their site, what they're doing
there, and chat with them in real time. Scroll to the bottom of this
page to see if *I*'m online and chat with me if I am.
- mailing lists
- a search engine for mailing lists. Another place to find these is at
yahoo groups.
- newsgroups - a search engine for newsgroups.
- Health:
- The G6PD
Deficiency Homepage - I am G6PD deficient - this deficiency is pretty common amongst
people of Iraqui descent, like me (dad) so my mom never let me eat fava beans, just in
case I didn't have this enzyme. We grew up on horror stories about this cousin who had to
have all her blood replaced because she ate fava beans. But I didn't really know what the
whole thing was about, or if I really had it. When I was about 18 or so a simple blood
test revealed that I was in fact deficient, and then I found out that I wasn't supposed to
eat/use a lot of things, such as aspirin, which I had been using all my life... oh well
:). Anyways, for me, this deficiency is definitely not a big thing but it seems that it
can be manifested in many ways.
- Multiple
Sclerosis Information Gateway - my dad has MS. For some reason my
family thinks this should be kept private, so here's hoping they don't
read my web page.
